A week to speak Sicilian, everywhere

Simana dû Sicilianu (Sicilian Week) is the first international event to celebrate the Sicilian lanugage. It's a moment to share our projects and to show that Sicilian is a living language. It's a time to study the language, to be able to write and speak it better. And it's a social exercise to use the language in more contexts, more places, and with more people in Sicily.

Use the hashtag #simanadusicilianu to participate!

How can you participate?

  • The main aim of this event is to use Sicilian in as many contexts as possible. With strangers or with friends with whom we usually speak in Italian. In shops, restaurants, offices, maybe even at school! This week is a social exercise to change our habits, and speak our language in multiple contexts. Sicilian is not a language of the past; it’s a language of today!

  • We all know how to speak Sicilian, real Sicilian, right? But with TV, radio, books, everything always in English or Italian, it's normal for us to forget a few words! This week is a good time to study the language and learn to write in Sicilian.

  • Sicilian lacks many things that other modern languages have: books for adults, books for children, TV series, music, podcasts, videos. This week is a time to create new things for the language. Have you already created something in or about the language? Let us know! We'll publicize all your projects and share them at the end of the week!

Who are we?

We're a group of Sicilians and Sicilian-Americans who want to see Sicilian grow in the years to come. Sicilian Week is not part of any organization, company, or political party. We take inspiration from other minority language movements, such as Basque, Catalan, and Welsh which already have weeks to celebrate and promote their languages. Now it's Sicilian's turn! We want to see Sicilian used everywhere, in shops, in churches, at work, in schools, and even in politics and by the Sicilian government. Help us build a more beautiful future for Sicilian!

We’ll send a couple of emails a little earlier in the week to remind everyone of the event. Together we can make the Sicilian language flourish!
